Jamie Carragher has called for Manchester United to sack Michael Carrick amid a poor start to the season, asserting that Unai Emery of Aston Villa would be the ideal replacement.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has thrown his weight behind Unai Emery as the perfect candidate for Manchester United should they part ways with Michael Carrick.

With United struggling at the start of the season, hovering in 16th place in the Premier League, Carragher made his case following a brutal 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth. Speaking on Sky Sports, he asserted that Emery is the best manager in the league right now and elaborated on why he believes he’s the right fit for the club.

"He’s the manager I think of when I consider Manchester United. People say he runs everything behind the scenes at Aston Villa. Sir Alex Ferguson did the same at Manchester United. This isn’t just about the 'United Way'; it’s football in general."

The Spanish coach has guided Aston Villa to a Champions League berth and seems quite settled at the club. However, Carragher is confident that the opportunity to take the reins at such a prestigious club could be too good for Emery to turn down. United’s shortlist also reportedly includes Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann, but Carragher insists the hierarchy needs to act decisively regarding Carrick’s future.

"He needs to be removed from his position this evening. Not just for Manchester United’s benefit, but for Michael Carrick’s well-being, too. Manchester United must make this decision tonight."
