Hull City manager Sergey Yakirovich added a touch of humour when asked how his side plans to halt Chelsea's potent attack ahead of their Premier League clash.
The encounter is set for September 12 at Stamford Bridge. Hull City comes into the match in fine form, remaining the only team in the Premier League yet to concede a goal this season.
In contrast, Chelsea boasts one of the league's most prolific attacks, having netted eight goals in their opening three matches.
“Punch them?”
At a press conference, Yakirovich was quizzed on how Hull intends to cope with the attacking prowess of Xabi Alonso's Chelsea.
The manager's response was unexpected:
“Punch them? No.”
After the jest, Yakirovich elaborated seriously, stating that man-marking Chelsea's players might be futile given their ability to navigate around defenders with great skill and quick combination play.
He emphasised that Hull will need to remain compact and defend as a unit.
Yakirovich: Individual marking won’t work
The Hull City boss noted the limitations of personal marking against Chelsea's attackers, suggesting that they could outmanoeuvre one, two, or even three defenders. He stressed the need for his side to work cohesively and defend collectively.
“They are capable of beating one, two, or three players. We must act as one whole — a compact team, working together and defending as a unit,”
explained Yakirovich, acknowledging the formidable challenge posed by their opponents.
Chelsea finding their rhythm
Alonso's side approaches the match following a thrilling comeback in the EFL Cup. After trailing Leeds 3-1, Chelsea produced an impressive turnaround to win 6-3.
Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer were among the standout performers in that encounter.
The attacking trio of Rogers, Palmer, and Joao Pedro has collectively made 10 goal contributions this season, signalling a serious threat to Hull's defence.
Hull yet to concede in the Premier League
However, Hull isn't stepping into the capital merely to defend. They have become the only Premier League club that hasn’t conceded a goal after three matches.
Now their defenders face an even stiffer challenge in maintaining that clean slate against one of the league's most dangerous attacks.
Despite recognising the scale of the task, Yakirovich refuses to abandon his team's philosophy.
“This is a big challenge for us. The match will be very tough, but we will try to play our game,”
stated Yakirovich.
