Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville has shared his surprise and happiness at Michael Carrick remaining at the helm at Old Trafford for at least one more game.
"I'm glad. I'm surprised, but I'm glad because I was absolutely certain that what I saw on Sunday would mark the end for Michael," said Neville on Sky Sports.
It seemed like a farewell walk as he trudged off at the end of the match, with players trailing behind him. He waved to the fans almost in an apologetic manner, yet it felt like a goodbye. I’m shocked he’s still in charge, but I’m pleased because Sunday was a very tough situation," he added.
As for what happens in the coming weeks, I have no idea. I hope he can motivate these players to perform for him because they certainly haven't in recent weeks.
There were strong indications that Carrick would be shown the door following heavy defeats to Como and Bournemouth. However, the head coach remains in charge and is likely to hold onto his position until the international break in November, with a crucial match against Chelsea this weekend and two more fixtures to navigate.
