Gary Lineker believes Cesc Fabregas should steer clear of a potential offer to take charge at Manchester United. The former England striker labelled the role a significant risk given the club's instability and the pressure on current manager Michael Carrick.
Fabregas has garnered attention for his work at Como, and if the Spanish manager continues to achieve success, interest from bigger clubs could grow. Manchester United is among the clubs being discussed as a potential move.
Lineker labels United role as a risky step
Speaking on the podcast The Rest Is Football, Lineker commented that should Fabregas prove successful in Italy, offers from major clubs are likely to follow.
“At some point, he will need to make a big decision. If he continues to achieve at least moderate success with Como, a big club will come calling. It could be United. If he takes that job, he would be mad! It’s really a graveyard,” said Lineker.
The former player expressed doubt that a switch to the Manchester club would be a savvy career choice for the young manager.
Shearer also questions the role's appeal
Lineker's co-host, Alan Shearer, concurred with his assessment. He believes that despite Manchester United's storied history, the current state of the club makes the job less appealing for prospective candidates.
“I understand it’s a huge football club, but this job doesn’t appear attractive right now, considering how many managers they’ve gone through and how many have been sacked,” remarked Shearer.
He added with irony that one of the few appealing aspects of the position might be the potential for a hefty pay-off if sacked after 12 or 18 months.
Carrick under pressure
The pressure on Michael Carrick intensified following Manchester United's 1-4 defeat to Como in the Champions League. The team's next crucial test will be a Premier League match against Bournemouth.
In this context, Fabregas' potential future in English football remains a topic of conversation. However, there have been no confirmed negotiations between the Spanish manager and Manchester United in the material provided.
For now, Fabregas will continue with his work at Como as Carrick aims to stabilise the results for the Mancunians.
