Brazilian forward Gabriel Martinelli has officially concluded his seven-year spell with Arsenal, signing with Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal. The transfer fee stands at a guaranteed £60 million, with additional terms including a sell-on percentage.
The 25-year-old has penned a long-term deal with Al-Hilal, reportedly earning a salary significantly higher than the £180,000 per week he earned at Arsenal.
"Proud to be a Blue, proud to be part of Al-Hilal," Martinelli expressed in a welcome video on the club's social media channels.
Martinelli joined Arsenal from Brazilian side Ituano back in 2019. With just 12 months remaining on his Emirates contract, he played a crucial role last season, contributing 11 goals in 53 appearances across all competitions to help secure the Gunners’ first Premier League title in 22 years.
However, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta recently informed the winger that he would not feature in his plans for the ongoing campaign. Martinelli was omitted from the squad lists for both the opening match against Coventry City and the game against Aston Villa, as the manager made it clear that the winger's playing time would be minimal.
This decision has faced sharp criticism, notably from Arsenal legend Ian Wright, who aired his discomfort on Sky Sports:
"The way Martinelli is being treated right now makes me genuinely uncomfortable. I understand the club might want to move on, and many might say, ‘Yes, it's time to go,’ but there's a right way to do these things, and the process of parting should consider the player’s interests and how he deserves to leave."
At Al-Hilal, managed by Italian tactician Simone Inzaghi, Martinelli will form part of a new attacking line-up. The club recently secured England international Ollie Watkins from Aston Villa for £51 million, alongside Dutch winger Krisensio Summerville from West Ham United.
