The Costa Rican Football Federation has officially appointed legendary former captain Bryan Ruiz as the permanent head coach of the men's national team. The 41-year-old has been tasked with leading the team to the 2030 World Cup.
Ruiz stepped into the role on 28 September following the sacking of Fernando Batista. He promptly reintegrated experienced goalkeeper Keylor Navas into the squad.
Under the guidance of the young manager, Costa Rica secured back-to-back victories at the Ricardo Saprissa Stadium, triumphing over Nicaragua (3-0) and Haiti (2-0), ensuring their place in League A of the CONCACAF Nations League.
This marks Ruiz's first foray into senior management after previously working with youth teams and serving as an assistant at Alajuelense. He will be joined on the coaching staff by former teammates Wilmer Lopez and Christian Bolanos.
During his illustrious playing career, Ruiz donned the jerseys of Twente, PSV, Fulham, Sporting, Santos, and Alajuelense. He captained the national team at three World Cups.
Now, the new coach faces a significant rebuilding challenge, with international friendlies against Ecuador and Argentina on the horizon in November.
