This season could mark the end of Una Emery's tenure at Aston Villa, with wealthy European giants reportedly eyeing the Basque manager ahead of next summer. This insight comes from former club director Keith Wyness, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider.
According to Wyness, the manager might be tempted to leave due to the stringent financial constraints currently placed on the Birmingham club.
Emery has been in charge at Villa Park since October 2022, leading the team to a long-awaited trophy last season and currently competing fiercely at the top of the Premier League against much richer rivals.
However, the Spaniard's future remains uncertain. Despite summer spending of around £280 million, financial pressures continue to grip the club. These hefty outlays were a necessary response to the departure of several key players.
Wyness, who served as Aston Villa's chief executive from 2016 to 2018 and now runs a consultancy for top clubs, elaborated on the situation in the Inside Track podcast:
Should we panic? No. Should we pay close attention? Absolutely. Emery is fully focused on the current season, but even his patience will be tested by UEFA regulations. He will feel restricted in his coaching capabilities as he competes against teams with bottomless cheque books. The club's owners are fantastic and support the manager 100 per cent; it's for them that he is willing to fight til the end. But at some point, he may receive an offer from a club unencumbered by financial shackles, and Emery will be in high demand in the market. Concerns about him being poached are very real. If it happens, it could be next summer.
A key pressure point remains UEFA's strict regulations regarding the ratio of spending on the squad to income (SCR). Aston Villa is bound by an agreement with football authorities and must gradually reduce this expense for several upcoming seasons.
