The Manchester City manager Enzo Marquez reflected on his team's narrow defeat at the hands of Aston Villa, pointing to a 1-2 scoreline during the eighth round of the Premier League. In an interview with TNT Sports, Marquez expressed his belief that his players did not deserve the loss, albeit acknowledging certain errors.
'Overall, we had a good match. We created a lot of chances. In the second half, the only threat came from our losing possession, leading to a counter-attack that resulted in the goal,' Marquez commented.
The City boss stressed the need for improved defensive organisation in such scenarios, arguing that results can sometimes hinge on a stroke of luck.
Marquez explains the reasons for defeat
He believes that both goals conceded could have been avoided. However, he was quick to highlight that his team did create numerous opportunities which warranted a better outcome.
'Certainly, both goals were avoidable. Sometimes it takes a bit more luck, as we allowed them to create only two clear opportunities. But we ourselves generated many chances,' he stated.
Marquez also pointed out that Manchester City spent the majority of the match near Villa's penalty area but failed to capitalise on their opportunities.
'We had plenty of moments. We spent much of the game in their box, but we need to be more clinical and reduce mistakes that led to the two goals we conceded,' he added.
On the streak of setbacks at Villa Park
When questioned about City's disappointing run at Aston Villa's ground, Marquez chose to focus on the recent match instead.
'Next season we'll give it another go. Right now, I can only analyse today's game. I don't think we deserved to lose, but we did,' he concluded.
Nevertheless, the manager acknowledged that the team must learn from recent events and rectify their mistakes.
Next up: Brighton
Manchester City's next challenge comes in the form of Brighton. Marquez is bracing for a tough encounter and emphasised the need for his team to regroup after their defeat and prepare for the upcoming match.
'We'll see. It will be a different game. Brighton are doing fantastic work, and both encounters will be challenging. But first and foremost, we need to recover and get ready,' the manager concluded.
Manchester City fell to Aston Villa with a score of 1-2, with Nicolas Jackson netting a brace for the hosts while Erling Haaland scored the visitors' only goal.
