Dominik Szoboszlai is confident that he and Steven Gerrard could have taken to the pitch together for Liverpool — provided, of course, that the Anfield icon donned the jersey of a right-back.
In a light-hearted exchange during an interview with TNT Sports, Gerrard posed the question to the Hungarian midfielder about the prospect of them sharing a team at Anfield.
Szoboszlai responded with a cheeky quip:
“I think so. I’d wear number 10, while you’d be number 2.”
This playful remark highlights Szoboszlai's versatility. Last season, he occasionally filled in at right-back due to Liverpool's injury woes, although he clearly prefers to operate further up the pitch.
Szoboszlai not keen on right-back role
The 25-year-old also shared insights from his initial conversations with Liverpool's new head coach Andoni Iraola.
According to Szoboszlai, the manager has already made it clear that he doesn’t plan to utilise him as a regular right-back.
“He once told me that I wouldn’t be playing as a right-back. That means a lot to me,”
the midfielder remarked, adding that he is, however, willing to step back defensively if absolutely necessary.
For Szoboszlai, the issue isn’t merely positional; rather, it's about his preference to be stationed in the centre of the park.
Preferred positions — No. 8 or No. 10
Szoboszlai admitted that he feels most at home in the roles of an eighth or tenth number.
“From eight to ten — like a box-to-box eight. Getting the ball from the defenders, making long passes, arriving in the box and taking shots from distance. That’s what I truly enjoy,”
he explained, while also stressing his willingness to comply with the manager's tactics wherever needed.
Liverpool need to regain championship intensity
Szoboszlai also urged the team to rediscover the intensity that enabled Liverpool to clinch the Premier League title in the 2024/25 season.
He believes that high tempo, aggression, and constant pressure should once again become core principles of Liverpool's play.
It’s now down to Iraola to find an optimal role for one of Liverpool's most adaptable talents, with Szoboszlai clearly favouring a central role over that of a right-back.
