Borussia Dortmund are unwavering in their decision to keep hold of Felix Nmecha this January, even with significant interest from Premier League giants Manchester United and Liverpool. The club deems the midfielder crucial to their plans and will only entertain discussions regarding his future this summer.
The 26-year-old has emerged as a key figure under coach Niko Kovac since his move from Wolfsburg in 2023. Nmecha's technical skills, physical strength, and high work rate have made him one of the most reliable midfielders in the Bundesliga.
Interest from English clubs has been long-standing, with Manchester United tracking the player for some time and previously reaching out to assess potential midfield reinforcements. Liverpool have also added Nmecha to their wishlist as they look for alternatives should they fail to secure Alex Scott.
Earlier interest from Chelsea and Roma has been noted, while Newcastle previously explored a deal before deciding against it. Nevertheless, Borussia’s negotiating position remains robust.
Earlier this year, Nmecha signed a new contract that runs until 2030, and the Dortmund hierarchy has made it clear that they plan to keep him for the long haul. Notably, the situation is further complicated by the fact that his release clause, set at €80 million, will only come into effect in the summer.
Until then, potential suitors will have to negotiate directly with Borussia, who are now apparently valuing the midfielder at around €100 million. That hefty price tag has already deterred some prospective clubs.
In Dortmund, there is a belief that selling one of their key players mid-season could be overly risky, especially as they continue to compete on multiple fronts. Kovac and his coaching team prioritise stability in midfield and are unwilling to alter this area of their squad in January, making a summer transfer the most realistic outcome.
By that point, the activation of the €80 million clause will simplify matters for Manchester United, Liverpool, and any other interested parties. Until the end of the current season, one thing is certain: Nmecha is not going anywhere.
