Arsenal plans to appeal Max Douman's red card from the League Cup match against Fleetwood. The winger was sent off for striking an opponent and may miss three games, including one against Liverpool. Mikel Arteta has expressed his disappointment with Douman's conduct.

Arsenal is set to challenge the red card received by Max Douman during the League Cup match against Fleetwood Town. The 16-year-old winger now faces a potential three-match ban, including the crucial fixture against Liverpool, leaving manager Mikel Arteta notably unhappy with the young player's actions.

Douman was sent off in the 85th minute following a clash with Fleetwood midfielder Harrison Neal, who had tackled the young winger robustly. In response, Douman retaliated with a kick, which the referee deemed as aggressive behaviour, leading to an immediate red card.

The teenager appeared stunned by the referee's decision but nonetheless had to exit the field.

Arteta's frustration exposed

As Douman made his way towards the tunnel, Mikel Arteta expressed his displeasure with a disapproving glance, reportedly giving the young player a stern talking-to.

With Douman’s dismissal leaving Arsenal a man down, they ultimately succumbed to Fleetwood in a penalty shootout, finishing with a 5:3 defeat and exiting the League Cup.

After the match, Arteta reminded his squad of the importance of managing their emotions, saying,

“When we prepared for the game, we clearly explained what things needed to be respected and which emotions needed to be kept in check. It was abundantly clear.”

For Douman, this incident marked a disappointing turn following his previous successes, where he scored two goals against Ipswich in the last round of the League Cup, underlining his status as one of Arsenal's most promising academy talents.

Arsenal to contest potential suspension

The London club is gearing up to lodge an appeal against the referee's decision. The red card was issued for aggressive behaviour, which, according to football regulations, includes excessive force or brutality towards an opponent outside of a challenge for the ball—even the absence of physical contact does not preclude punishment.

In Douman's case, although there was contact with Harrison Neal, the nature of the kick did not appear to constitute a full-blown strike, suggesting the likelihood of a successful appeal may be low.

If the original decision is upheld, Douman will miss three matches, creating further complications for Arsenal.

Squad concerns ahead of Liverpool

The potential suspension of Douman adds to Arteta's woes, as the Gunners are already without Bukayo Saka, Christos Tsolis, and Noni Madueke. This leaves the options for attacking flanks increasingly limited.

This coming Sunday, Arsenal will face Liverpool at Anfield, followed by matches against Hull and Newcastle, all of which Douman risks missing.

For the 16-year-old, this red card could represent a significant early disciplinary setback in his burgeoning career, while for Arsenal, it marks yet another player loss during a challenging period of the season.
