Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has praised Andoni Iraola's impact on the team. The Argentine stated that the new head coach transformed the atmosphere within the squad following a challenging season under Arne Slot.
Iraola took charge of Liverpool in June, succeeding Slot, who led the Merseysiders to the Premier League title in the 2024/25 season. However, in the following campaign, the team struggled to maintain their form, ultimately leading to the managerial change.
Mac Allister highlights the shift in team atmosphere
The Argentine midfielder acknowledged that the previous season was tough for the players, reflecting on his own performances.
“Last year was really hard for all of us. I clearly wasn’t at my best form, and I’m the first to admit it. I have no issues with that. There was something not quite right in the team, and this coach changed the situation,” Mac Allister stated.
He noted that the changes have not only affected the atmosphere in the dressing room but also the approach to the game, although he was careful not to directly compare the two coaches.
Iraola starts strongly at Liverpool
Statistical evidence from the initial matches has shown that under Iraola, Liverpool have enjoyed a successful start, with seven wins, three draws, and just one loss in their first 11 games.
One of the most recent successes came in a thrilling 4-3 victory over Villarreal in the Champions League, where Mac Allister netted a brace while playing in a more advanced position in midfield.
This tactical shift regarding the role of the Argentine midfielder is just one example of Iraola's adjustments. Mac Allister admitted that he currently feels comfortable and is enjoying his football again.
