15-Second Brief
Xabi Alonso will visit Anfield for the third time as an opposing manager to Liverpool. Ahead of the Carabao Cup clash with Chelsea, Andoni Iraola spoke warmly about his colleague but promised no favours on the pitch. Chelsea will be without Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro.

Xabi Alonso is set for his third trip to Anfield as the opposing manager, where he hopes to turn the tide after two prior defeats at the historic ground.

In his previous visits as a manager, Alonso's teams have struggled against Liverpool, suffering a heavy 0-4 loss with Bayer Leverkusen and falling to a narrow 0-1 defeat while in charge of Real Madrid. Now, the former Reds midfielder returns as Chelsea’s manager, aiming for his first coaching victory at a venue that holds countless memories for him.

Iraola: 'Nobody's making allowances'

Liverpool come into this clash on the back of four consecutive victories across all competitions, shaking off a disappointing defeat to Manchester City.

Recent performances have seen the Reds showcase resilience, with hard-fought wins over Brentford and Villarreal, plus a solid 2-0 triumph against Brighton. Ahead of the Chelsea match, Andoni Iraola is keen to stress his team's commitment to winning, regardless of the opposition or competition standing.

The Spanish manager asserted:

It doesn't matter what tournament we're in, what lineup we choose, or the situation we find ourselves in. We always aim to win.

This desire only grows stronger when you understand what victory means. We know our opponents will take to the pitch with the same intentions, and that is particularly relevant as we prepare to face a very strong Chelsea side.

In a personal note directed at Xabi Alonso, whom he knows well, Iraola added:

Xabi is someone I hold in high regard and our fans have a lot of affection for him.

I want to offer him the warmest welcome possible. But once the match starts, no one will be giving out any favours. That’s something none of us would want.

Chelsea to miss Palmer and Joao Pedro

The Londoners are facing the match with significant absentees. Cole Palmer is suspended, and Joao Pedro is ruled out due to injury.

One potential replacement for the Brazilian could be Danny Welbeck, who has plenty of experience against Liverpool, having played 28 matches against the Merseysiders and netting five goals.

If Alonso opts to utilise him from the start, Welbeck could find himself in the starting XI.

Both managers may rotate their squads

The timing of this League Cup tie comes at a busy juncture for both teams.

This weekend, Chelsea will take on Manchester United while Liverpool prepare for a showdown with Arsenal. Consequently, both Iraola and Alonso will have to manage their players' fitness and consider rotation options.

However, Iraola has made it clear that the League Cup remains a vital competition for his side.

For Alonso, this upcoming fixture presents yet another chance to secure a win at Anfield as manager of the opposing team.
