15-Second Brief
Rio Nguemoa opted for a move from Chelsea to Liverpool, where he secured a genuine opportunity to establish himself in the first team.

Chelsea spent eight years nurturing Rio Nguemoa, yet the talented winger opted to continue his career at Liverpool in 2024. Two years on, he firmly believes he made the right decision, as his rapid development serves as a painful reminder of what the Blues have lost.

I think there were a few other clubs interested when I left Chelsea, Nguemoa revealed in an interview with ITV Football.

Liverpool was always the right option—and it was essentially the only one.

The player clarified that he sought a club that would offer him a genuine chance to showcase his abilities, and so far, this decision has paid off entirely.

A key issue for Nguemoa was the pathway to the first team. While considered one of the brightest talents in his age group at Chelsea, he doubted he would get the opportunities he needed for rapid growth. Despite assurances from the hierarchy, they couldn’t convince him to stay. In contrast, Liverpool provided a tangible example of youth trust—prior to Nguemoa's decision, academy graduates had helped secure a victory against Chelsea in the 2024 League Cup final.

Moreover, Chelsea’s transfer policy, which included significant investments in young attacking players like Ecuadorian talent Kendry Paez, highlighted the club's challenging priorities: how much space would there be for their own academy products amid the influx of pricey new signings?

At Liverpool, Nguemoa quickly rose through the youth ranks and made his senior debut in January 2025. By August 2025, he announced himself in the Premier League, scoring a winner in the 100th minute against Newcastle, making him the club's youngest-ever goalscorer. Subsequently, a tribunal mandated Liverpool to pay Chelsea a training compensation fee ranging from £2.8 million to £6.8 million and secured the Blues 20% of any future resale fee.
