Peter Schmeichel has criticised Manchester United for selling Rasmus Hojlund, stating the striker lacked support from his teammates.

Legendary goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has launched a scathing critique of Manchester United following the club's decision to part ways with Rasmus Hojlund. Schmeichel believes the striker was left to struggle without adequate backing from his teammates during his tenure at Old Trafford.

He is convinced that Hojlund possesses immense potential, stating that the forward would find the back of the net at any club worldwide. Schmeichel also questioned the wisdom of signing Benjamin Sesko, who has a history of injuries.

Hojlund joined Manchester United from Atalanta in the summer of 2023 for a hefty £72 million. In his debut season, the promising forward scored 16 goals; however, his follow-up campaign saw a disappointing 10, with just two of those coming in the Premier League. By 2025, he was loaned out to Napoli, and following a successful spell in Serie A, the Italian club secured his permanent transfer in June.

Schmeichel stood up for the player, highlighting Hojlund's loyalty to the club:

Rasmus Hojlund was a goal-scoring machine. And he will be everywhere. He may go through dry spells, but he will score plenty. He’s young and has been a massive fan of Manchester United since childhood. He would give everything for this club, but he played in a period where he had no support.

He had teammates who openly refused to pass to him. A young lad who needed to be nurtured... I see him play for the Danish national team – he’s a fantastic player.

The former keeper also critiqued the club’s transfer policy and the influx of specialists from the Red Bull system, who have favoured the acquisition of Benjamin Sesko.

What are we doing? The head of scouting comes from Red Bull, and who does he bring? His own player. In the end, we got Benjamin Sesko, who is a brilliant player but is constantly injured and not playing,
