15-Second Brief
Reflecting on David Rocastle's iconic goal for Arsenal against Manchester United in 1991, where the midfielder single-handedly took on the opposition's midfield and lobbed Peter Schmeichel.

Memory has a funny way of working. Dates, birthdays, and names often fade, but tie them to a football match or a goal, and those memories stick with us forever. Surprisingly, one of the greatest goals in English football history—a gem from David Rocastle against Manchester United at Old Trafford in 1991—has somehow slipped from public consciousness.

In October 1991, Arsenal made the trip to Manchester, taking on a United side that boasted three direct competitors for Rocastle's place in the England squad in their midfield. Rocastle, whose potential seemed limitless, put on a performance that deserved to feature in all the history books.

A solo show on Manchester United's half just before half-time:

  • First, Rocastle outmuscled Neil Webb.
  • Next, he brushed off Paul Ince in a physical tussle.
  • With his trademark trickery, he left United's captain, Bryan Robson, in the dust, completely dismantling the opposition's midfield.

Finding himself sandwiched between defenders Steve Bruce and Clayton Blackmore, 30 yards from goal, Rocastle kept his cool and executed a stunning lob over none other than Peter Schmeichel. The ball struck the crossbar, ricocheted off the legendary Danish goalkeeper's head, and ended up in the net. Although this moment is officially recorded as an own goal by Schmeichel, for football romantics, it will forever remain the great goal of David Rocastle—one that left Manchester United's stars looking lost and helpless.
