Dirk Kuyt is set for an emotional encounter with Liverpool. The former Liverpool striker has stepped in as the interim head coach of Fenerbahce, and on Wednesday, he will face his old club in the Champions League.
Fenerbahce's hierarchy entrusted Kuyt with the team following the sacking of Ismail Kartal, whose departure came amid disappointing results.
The Dutchman, who had been serving as an assistant coach, will guide the Istanbul club in their next three matches.
His first major test will be the meeting with Liverpool in the Champions League, a clash that promises to be particularly poignant.
Liverpool legend now on the other side
Liverpool have started their European campaign strongly under Andoni Iraola's management.
The Reds currently sit third in the Champions League table, while Fenerbahce finds itself languishing in 31st place.
For Kuyt, the upcoming match will undoubtedly stir emotions. Having played for Liverpool for six seasons, he became a fan favourite thanks to his relentless work ethic and commitment.
He left an indelible mark during his time at the club, and now he faces them as an opposing head coach for the first time.
Liverpool fans making the trip to Turkey are expected to give their former striker a warm welcome.
However, on the pitch, Kuyt faces a much tougher challenge — stopping Iraola's side, who are in fine form in the European tournament.
A challenging coaching journey for Kuyt
After hanging up his boots, Kuyt aimed to carve out a career in management, but his early experiences were mixed. He took the helm at ADO Den Haag in 2022 but was dismissed just five months later following a string of poor results.
In December 2023, he found a new opportunity at Belgian side Beerschot.
There, Kuyt tasted his first significant success, winning the Belgian second division in the 2023/24 season, subsequently leading the team to the top flight. However, they struggled to maintain their status and were relegated the following season.
Later, he had a stint with Dordrecht in the Dutch second division before joining Fenerbahce's coaching staff in 2026.
Now, he gets a chance to temporarily steer one of Turkey's biggest clubs.
Three matches to make his mark
In addition to the Liverpool fixture, Kuyt will also lead Fenerbahce in Super Lig matches against Goztepe and Corum FK.
Currently, the Istanbul side trails table-toppers Galatasaray by six points in the national league.
Fenerbahce's hierarchy is hopeful that the change in management will help stabilise results.
At this point, Kuyt's role is strictly temporary, and his long-term future as head coach remains uncertain.
The showdown with Liverpool will be the biggest test of his coaching career so far.
While the Dutchman can expect a warm reception from the fans of his former club, he will need to do everything in his power to secure a victory over the Merseysiders this time around.
