Liverpool defender Ronald Araujo has revealed the psychological struggles that led him to pause his career. The Uruguayan lost joy in football and was compelled to seek professional help.

Liverpool defender Ronald Araujo has opened up about a challenging period that forced him to put his career on hold last year.

In an interview with The Times, the Uruguayan spoke about the euphoric moment when he scored in the Champions League victory over Villarreal. However, just months prior, he was battling his own demons.

It was a very tough period. I felt that I needed to take a step back. I hadn’t felt right for a long time and no longer got joy from what I love most: football.

The psychological struggles began after receiving red cards in Champions League matches against PSG in 2024 and Chelsea in the subsequent season.

I realised that I needed to open up, seek help, and talk not just with those close to me, but also with professionals.

Sometimes you bottle everything up and try to put on a brave face, but in life, it’s important to articulate and trust others with what you’re going through.

During this difficult time, Araujo spent nearly a month away from Barcelona. He returned to Uruguay, where he found solace in his Christian faith.
