Alexis Mac Allister has admitted he was 'very upset' when he found out Liverpool are not currently prepared to offer him a new contract.
The 27-year-old Argentine joined the Reds from Brighton in the summer of 2023 on a five-year deal, with approximately two years left on his existing contract.
Despite this, new long-term agreements have been struck with teammates Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch until 2026, making the absence of a proposal for Mac Allister all the more surprising.
«I received the news that the club can't offer me a new contract right now, and of course, it makes me very, very sad,» said Mac Allister.
«I give my all 100%»
The midfielder highlighted his commitment to Liverpool, insisting he will continue to give his all on the pitch regardless of the contract situation.
«Everyone can see that I give 100% every day in training and in matches. Of course, I have good and bad games like any other player, but I always try to put in maximum effort,» he stated.
Mac Allister conveyed his happiness for Szoboszlai and Gravenberch getting their new deals but lamented not being in a similar position himself.
«I see Dominik and Ryan extending their contracts, and that makes me very happy because they deserve it. At the same time, it's a bit sad for me that I haven't received mine yet. Of course, there's still time,» he added.
He reassured fans not to worry as he remains fully committed to the club.
«There’s no need for fans to be concerned because I will give 100% until my last day here,» Mac Allister promised.
Mac Allister had options to leave
The midfielder also confirmed he had opportunities to leave Liverpool during the summer window.
«There were options to leave this summer. But right now, I feel I am in the right club and have the right mindset to give 100% to this club,» he explained.
Mac Allister had previously been linked with a move to Manchester City; however, he mentioned that he does not feel the need to prove his worth to Liverpool's hierarchy.
«I don’t think I need to prove anything. But I must show the level I am capable of playing at,» he said.
The Argentine highlighted his strong attachment to the club, stating:
«I love this club. I love the fans. I know it's an amazing club and there’s something special about this city. I really enjoy being here.»
Iraola: «He wants to be here»
Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola also weighed in on the contract situation concerning the midfielder.
The Spanish coach suggested that he sees no problems in the current scenario and holds Mac Allister in high regard.
«Each of us has personal situations regarding different contracts. The key point is that he wants to be here. We haven’t worked together for long, but he’s an important player, and I value him highly,» Iraola asserted.
He added that contract negotiations might still take place in the future.
«There’s still plenty of time ahead to discuss these contract situations,» he said.
Mac Allister expressed positive sentiments about Liverpool’s new boss, stating he sensed something special during pre-season training.
«He’s a really good coach; he knows exactly what he wants to achieve, and we’re trying to get there,» he remarked.
Mac Allister seeks to regain his best form
Last season was challenging for the midfielder. He acknowledged that both individually and collectively, the 2025/26 season was a disappointment for Liverpool.
The Reds finished the league in fifth place and parted ways with coach Arne Slot. Mac Allister featured in 55 matches across all competitions, contributing substantially.
During the championship-winning campaign of 2024/25, he was a pivotal presence, netting five goals and providing five assists in the Premier League.
Now, he’s aiming to return to that level of performance. While a new contract hasn't been offered yet, his situation could change if he impresses under Iraola's guidance.
Furthermore, with Liverpool set to appoint a new sporting director following Richard Hughes' departure, this could also influence decisions regarding the Argentine's contract.
For now, Mac Allister remains committed to Liverpool, reiterating that his focus is entirely on the team.
