15-Second Brief
Alan Shearer's debut for Blackburn Rovers in the inaugural season of the Premier League in 1992/93 saw him score a double against Crystal Palace, laying the foundation for his eternal record of 260 goals, following his record £3.6 million transfer.
Alan Shearer's record of 260 goals in the Premier League remains unmatched. The legendary forward had incredible seasons in the top flight, with the start of his great story coinciding with the early days of English football's modern era.
The dawn of Shearer's era
- Record transfer: After scoring 13 goals for Southampton and making a successful debut for the England national team, the 21-year-old striker moved to newly promoted Blackburn Rovers for a then-record British fee of £3.6 million.
- Scintillating at Selhurst Park: In the very first weekend of the Premier League, Blackburn drew with Crystal Palace (3-3). Shearer netted a brace, scoring the first two of his 260 goals. The first was a thundering strike from outside the box, while his second was a sublime curled effort.
- The humility of a future legend: After the match, the forward remarked, “I will keep my feet on the ground and hopefully score more goals than I miss. I didn’t set that price on myself. I just go out and play like Alan Shearer.”
- Injury setback and rise: Shearer scored 12 goals in his first 11 matches, but in December, he tore his cruciate ligaments. Upon recovery, he embarked on a phenomenal streak, netting 96 goals over three seasons, leading Blackburn to the Premier League title in the 1994/95 season.
Later, Shearer returned to his boyhood club Newcastle United, where he scored 206 goals and solidified his status as the all-time top scorer in English football history.
