Sunderland continue their Europa League journey with an away clash against Torreense. The English club faces a tough scenario, grappling with significant injuries and a slow start to the season.
Last month, Sunderland achieved a memorable 1-0 victory over AZ at the Stadium of Light, marking their first foray into European competition in 53 years. However, the domestic campaign has been a different story, with the team managing just five points from their opening six matches, scoring a mere six goals while conceding 12.
Torreense comes into this match buoyed by a 2-1 victory over Lillestrom, a result achieved away from home despite the setback of a red card.
Team News
For Sunderland, the absence of key players Brian Brobbey, Thomas Meunier, Dan Ballard, and Habib Diarra will be sorely felt, while Romein Mandl continues to recover from a serious knee injury.
On the other hand, Torreense will miss Nuh Yatta due to suspension but has no other significant absentees.
Projected Line-ups
Torreense: Adriël; Bruno, Diadi, Volnei, Vasquez; Udhiri, Alvaro; Posso, Marques, Jean; Abubakari.
Sunderland: Rufs; Mukiele, Danso, Alderete, Metali; Xhaka, Sadiki; Fofana, Le Fe, Angulo; Isidor.
The match will take place at the Dr Magalhaes Pessoa Stadium in Leiria, kicking off at 17:45 British time (19:45 MSK).
Due to UEFA stadium requirements, Torreense must host the match at this venue instead of their usual home ground.
For Sunderland, away games have been particularly challenging lately. They have conceded 16 goals in their last eight away matches, failing to keep a clean sheet in any of those encounters.
Torreense earned their spot in the Europa League following their victory in the 2025/26 Portuguese Cup final, where they triumphed over Sporting.
