Piers Morgan mocked Carragher for apologising to Aston Villa after the club threatened legal action due to Carragher's sharp remarks about fans and Emery's potential move to Manchester United. Morgan also referenced an old conflict.

Piers Morgan has mocked Jamie Carragher after the former Liverpool defender apologised to Aston Villa for his sharp remarks about the club and its fans.

Earlier, the Birmingham club announced their intention to pursue legal action due to comments made by the pundit regarding Unai Emery potentially moving to Manchester United.

What sparked the conflict

In the Stick to Football podcast, Carragher discussed possible successors to Michael Carrick at Manchester United and suggested that Emery might be interested in a role at Old Trafford.

The expert's comments upset Aston Villa fans, who were displeased that their club was portrayed as a less attractive place to work.

Carragher responded sharply:

Of course, he would want the chance to manage a giant club again. There is a hierarchy in football, whether you like it or not. For example, Real Madrid can take the best player from Manchester United, as happened with Cristiano Ronaldo. There aren't many clubs above Manchester United, the same goes for Liverpool.

But there are teams below Aston Villa, and they can take their manager or players. So, Villa fans, shut up. Aston Villa will never be Manchester United.

Aston Villa threatens Carragher with legal action

On Friday evening, the club's chairman Nassef Sawiris issued an official statement.

Aston Villa is initiating legal proceedings against Jamie Carragher for his unacceptable insults towards the club and its fans. Aston Villa will not allow anyone to halt our rise in English and European football.

The following day, Carragher published an apology.

I would like to apologise to Aston Villa, its owners, and its fans. I expressed myself poorly this week and was wrong.

I can assure Villa fans this was a joke, but I understand that my words came across differently. Therefore, I apologise. Best of luck today! Come on, Villa!

Morgan ridicules Carragher and recalls Ronaldo

The apology did not convince Piers Morgan, who publicly criticised the former footballer.

Why on earth are you apologising? Show some character.

The television host then referred back to their previous conflict over Cristiano Ronaldo.

Last month, Carragher stated that Morgan was making himself look ridiculous defending the Portuguese star after his exit from Portugal's training session.

Morgan shared an old clip with those words and ironically repeated the wording of Aston Villa's statement:

I am initiating legal proceedings against Jamie Carragher for his unacceptable insults. Do I also deserve humiliating apologies, Jamie?

At the time of publication, Aston Villa had not publicly responded to Carragher's apology. It is also unclear whether the club intends to continue with legal proceedings following his statement.
