Club legend Paul Scholes has heavily criticised Manchester United's defenders.
The former star is adamant that the team needs better and more reliable centre-backs to mount a title challenge.
“The current players don’t have the quality that I judge Manchester United on to go and win the Premier League,” Scholes said.
“You need centre-backs who are solid week in, week out. We’ve got Harry Maguire, who’s started to pick up little injuries, and Lisandro Martinez simply can’t stay fit at the moment. When he is fit, he’s a good player, don’t get me wrong,” the Englishman highlighted.
In his view, the overall situation at United is far from ideal, particularly regarding the younger players.
“They’ve got Leni Yoro, who has struggled for the past two years—he seems to be finding the Premier League a bit too much for him, and hopefully, he’ll improve this season,” the former midfielder added.
“If de Ligt is healthy and playing every week, he might actually be the best centre-back at Manchester United,” the veteran continued.
“But again, that raises questions about the centre-backs. You can’t have such uncertainties,” Scholes concluded.
