Michael Carrick will continue to lead Manchester United as head coach at least until the upcoming away match against Chelsea this Saturday. This decision follows nearly 44 hours of internal discussions after the team's disappointing 0-3 defeat to Bournemouth.
The club confirmed this decision officially on Tuesday around noon, shortly after Carrick arrived at the Carrington training base at 7:30am in his training gear. According to sources at The Athletic, a conference call took place on Monday involving co-owners Jim Ratcliffe, Avram and Joel Glazer, Chief Executive Officer, Omar Berrada, and Director of Football, Jason Wilcox. However, this decision does not constitute a full vote of confidence.
The situation suggests a lack of consensus within the club regarding available candidates for the role, with names like Eddie Howe, Julian Nagelsmann, and Antonio Conte being floated. Financial considerations also weigh heavily; Newcastle's compensation for Howe, as well as the high salaries of him and his assistant Jason Tindall were key factors. Furthermore, the sacking of Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim cost the club around £30 million, a significant hit to the budget for a club of this size. At present, United find themselves just two points and five places above the relegation zone.
Carrick has already held a closed meeting with players and staff to clarify the situation, which was deemed productive. One of the central concerns remains the return of captain Bruno Fernandes, who was benched for the last match. It's expected that following internal discussions and criticism of tactics from the player, a compromise will be reached allowing him to take the pitch. Remember, back in April under Carrick's management, Manchester United already defeated Chelsea away 1-0, effectively securing a spot in the Champions League.
Meanwhile, the players participated in the traditional Dream Day event hosted by the Manchester United Foundation at Carrington, meeting fans facing serious illnesses. Kobbie Mainoo was also in attendance and continues to make strides toward full recovery from injury.
