Former Manchester United defender Gary Pallister has urged fans not to be too quick in writing off Luke Shaw after a rough start to the season. Pallister insists the 31-year-old Englishman warrants more chances, especially considering his impressive performance in the previous campaign.
Shaw has started all three of United's matches in this season's Premier League. However, after the defeat to Hull City, Wayne Rooney was critical of his defensive efforts, while Patrice Evra suggested that Shaw's time at the club may be drawing to a close.
Pallister disagrees with such assessments:
There’s been a lot of talk surrounding Luke Shaw lately. He hasn't had the best pre-season and certainly hasn’t started off in great shape, but last season he was one of our standout players.
So I would advise a bit more patience. Luke has been playing left-back for United for a long time now. I’d give him more time before we start seriously worrying.
Nonetheless, Pallister acknowledged the defensive woes facing Michael Carrick's team, as United has conceded six goals in their opening three games:
We can’t keep shipping in that many goals. But it’s crucial not just to point the finger at the defenders. We need to look at those playing in front of them too. The midfielders should provide the necessary protection. Is there a proper balance at United? I’m not so sure.
Michael is certainly aware of this issue. The transfer window is now closed, so they will have to work with what they have. Perhaps he will call back Aiden Heaven or Leny Yoro, we’ll see. But the whole team needs to do a much better job of dealing with opponents.
Before the Champions League match against Sabah, Shaw missed training. Carrick explained that the defender was given an extra day to recover, stressing that it isn’t related to any long-term issue.
