Chelsea forward Danny Welbeck has reflected on his status as one of the most experienced players in the youthful squad at the London club. According to the 35-year-old striker, the lessons learned throughout his career—both positive and negative—allow him to take on the role of mentor with ease.
"I have to embrace this. Given my age, and especially in the dressing room I'm in now with lots of young players, I’ve been through a lot—good and bad. It feels completely natural for me to pass on plenty of advice to the young guys," Welbeck said.
The striker noted that his teammates frequently seek his guidance, revealing that he embraces his mentoring role without any reluctance:
"They come to me with a lot of questions. I accept this role, and I don’t have to think, 'I should do this or that.' It happens naturally. I simply enjoy helping people."
Welbeck also mentioned that his transition into the squad was aided by friendships formed with several players even before joining Chelsea. He described himself as light-hearted and enjoys lightening the mood off the pitch, but emphasised his focus when it comes to the game:
"I’m an easy-going person, I love to have a laugh, and I think the young lads appreciate that. But of course, when it comes to stepping onto the pitch, it’s time to score goals."
