15-Second Brief
Former Manchester United defender Brandon Williams has signed with Rotherham United in League Two after over a year without a club. He trained for several months with the team for free before securing a short-term contract.

Brandon Williams, the ex-Manchester United defender, is back in the game. The 26-year-old has inked a short-term deal with League Two outfit Rotherham United.

Williams has been without a club for over a year, but since June, he’s been training for free at the Roundwood training base, aiming to prove his fitness and professionalism.

Last year, the player received a suspended sentence of 14 months for dangerous driving, and now he’s keen to put that behind him and relaunch his career.

The club made an official announcement regarding the transfer.

The 26-year-old officially joins the Millers after working diligently during pre-season and demonstrating his readiness to Steve McClaren, Alex Bruce, and the coaching staff at the Roundwood training facility. The Manchester-born defender boasts an impressive pedigree, having earned his spot in the Manchester United first team after progressing through their renowned academy. Williams has played at the highest level for the Red Devils, featuring in the Champions League, Europa League, and Premier League, as well as gaining top-flight experience with Norwich City. Recently, he’s had spells with Ipswich Town and Hull City in the Championship, and he can also boast experience with England’s U20 and U21 teams. Williams will wear the number 33 shirt.

Rotherham's manager, Alex Bruce, has praised Williams’ dedication.

I am absolutely delighted that he’s become a Rotherham United player. He’s earned this contract through hard work. He has been incredibly committed during pre-season, showcasing a fantastic attitude and a hunger to come in every day without expecting payment. He has faced the reality of where he was in life. I know Brandon through my connections in Manchester and have crossed paths with him a few times. I know people who have worked with him at Manchester United, both as teammates and coaches. Steve McClaren and Richard Hartis know him well too. He looks a lot fitter than when he first arrived for pre-season, that’s for sure. Here’s hoping he can build on this and become an asset for the club. Let's not forget where he’s come from and the career he’s had, even though he’s still a young lad. I’m thrilled to give him this opportunity and hopefully kickstart his career.

Williams last played an official match back in August 2025, and now he’s looking forward to regularly taking to the pitch at the New York Stadium.
