Former West Bromwich Albion midfielder Kevin Castro has tragically passed away at the age of 25. The player collapsed during a friendly match in Portugal.
The heartbreaking incident occurred on Saturday during the first half of a pre-season friendly between third-tier side Real SC and top-flight outfit Estrela Amadora at the Estadio das Seixas in Lisbon. The Lisbon Football Association (AFL) has confirmed the player's passing during the match.
In a statement, Real SC expressed that the midfielder was an integral part of the club's family:
Kevin Castro was much more than just a footballer; he was a vital part of our family, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew him.
Castro joined West Brom in 2021 and made his debut for the senior team in a League Cup tie against Arsenal. He later featured in the Championship against Swansea City and had loan spells at Burton Albion, Notts County, Cambridge City, and York City, before returning to his native Portugal last summer.
West Brom's hierarchy stated that they are deeply shocked and heartbroken by the news of their former player's passing. In their Championship match against Burnley on Sunday, the Baggies will wear black armbands, and there will be a minute's applause in the stands during the 25th minute in memory of the midfielder.
