Rio Ferdinand has criticised Enzo Maresca for leaving Chelsea for Manchester City, expressing disappointment in his choice while supporting the hierarchy for appointing Xabi Alonso.

Former Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand has spoken out about the controversial managerial change at Chelsea. He expressed his disappointment with Enzo Maresca’s choice to leave the club halfway through a project for a chance to join Manchester City, while also commending the Chelsea leadership for quickly securing the services of Xabi Alonso.

Ferdinand pointed out that the true motives behind Maresca's departure had remained hidden from the public for some time:

I'll be honest: I never thought we would hear the full story from Maresca himself. For months, everyone blamed the club's owners for sacking one of the best managers in recent years, but the hierarchy simply knew what the public did not. If a player or a manager no longer sees the club as the place they want to be, why should the club try to keep them? Sometimes the strongest decision management can make is to let someone go at the right time.

The former player openly expressed his disappointment at the Italian's actions towards the London club:

It looked disappointing from Maresca’s side. Chelsea gave him the biggest opportunity of his career: they brought him in from Leicester, entrusted him with one of the most prestigious coaching positions in England, and provided a platform to build a strong reputation. You don’t walk away from such a club halfway through a project just because Pep Guardiola picks up the phone. That’s not how you repay a club that believed in you before anyone else.

Ferdinand added that Maresca's departure ultimately benefited the club:

I genuinely respect Chelsea for their swift action. As soon as the owners realised his mind was no longer on the team, they moved on instead of begging him to stay. And look who they brought in as a replacement—Xabi Alonso. He’s a manager with a more impressive CV and powerful charisma, someone capable of influencing the entire football club, not just the first team. Perhaps Maresca’s exit and Alonso becoming available at the same time wasn’t mere coincidence. This could prove to be a hidden blessing for the club.
