Jamie Redknapp has not held back in his criticism of Leni Yoro and Aiden Haven, following Manchester United's shocking loss to Brighton. Despite a bright start where the hosts led 2-0, the young defenders failed to cope with the pressure.
Shea Lacey marked his first start with a stunning goal, quickly followed by Mason Mount doubling the lead. However, it didn't take long for Brighton to respond, with Charalampos Kostoulas pulling one back before the break. In the second half, Pascal Gross and Maxim De Kuyper completed the comeback, handing Brighton a historic win as they became the first team in 50 years to triumph at Old Trafford after trailing by two goals.
Redknapp pointed out that the performances of Yoro and Haven showcased precisely why Michael Carrick tends to opt for the more experienced heads of Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez in the Premier League.
The pundit remarked:
The naivety of these two young centre-backs was clear to see. I have no doubt they’re calling their agents asking, ‘Why am I not playing?’. This is why. It’s because of performances like this.
They were both hopeless almost across the board. Compare them to Luka Vushkovic, who played with aggression. The United defenders were making poor decisions, throwing their hands up in frustration when things went wrong. Brighton took their defensive duties seriously. These two were poor today and need to step up.
When analysing one of Brighton's goals, Redknapp singled out blunders from both players:
Haven should have shifted and sprinted 20 yards to the player who was about to score. Instead, he stayed on his heels, didn't sense the danger and just plodded back.
Yoro also had an awful game. I genuinely don’t understand what he was doing. What kind of attempt was that to stop the ball? This is not five-a-side — it’s a serious tournament. You have to be aggressive.
Both displayed their inexperience. If that doesn’t change, they won’t regularly feature for Manchester United. I don’t care how much they cost.
Redknapp also acknowledged that Carrick's decision to field both Yoro and Haven in central defence backfired significantly. He also pointed fingers at debutant goalkeeper Karl Darlow, with former captain Ashley Young suggesting that confusion between the keeper and Haven led to the first goal conceded.
After this match, the positions of Maguire and Martinez as United's central defensive pairing could only solidify further.
