Coventry City defeated Sunderland 3-1 to move out of the Premier League relegation zone. After the match, Frank Lampard explained his decision to make four changes to the starting lineup, including benching captain Matt Grimes. Viktor Thorpe received particular praise from the manager.

The win allowed Coventry to increase their lead over Sunderland, who remain at the bottom of the table, to four points.

Lampard pleased with team's performance

The head coach noted not only the result but also the variety of play demonstrated by his players.

I am very pleased. I think we played well, showing excellent energy and quality. Our play was varied, and that reflected in the goals scored. We could confidently build from the back through passing, but when necessary, we played straight and effectively. That is how we look in our best form.

In some ways, Sunderland play similarly. But our energy and positive mindset transferred to the stands and helped us get ahead. Then the opponent earned a penalty and scored, but even after that, we continued to act very professionally and took the match to victory. So, I am absolutely satisfied with everything.

Why the captain was benched

Before the match, Lampard made four changes. One was forced due to a calf injury to defender Bobby Thomas, but the decision to leave Matt Grimes on the bench was intentional.

According to Lampard, the changes were necessary to refresh the team and give a chance to players who are gradually adapting to the demands of the Premier League.

There are two points here. The first is my choice of players given how we should use the full squad. Sometimes it is beneficial for the team to add freshness. The problem is that some of our players have not played in the Premier League before. They really want to get on the pitch, but they are still learning, as this is the highest level.

Some take time to adapt after joining the club. And at some point, you realise that now they are better prepared and it’s time to bring them in. After last week, I felt the right moment had come.

Viktor Thorpe earned his chance in training

Lampard specifically highlighted the Danish midfielder, whose work ethic convinced the coach to trust him with a starting spot.

There are players who train as if to say to you, ‘Put me in the lineup.’ First and foremost, I mean Viktor Thorpe. He works at an incredibly high level, displays true professionalism, and serves as an example to others. I am very happy for him today. I think he had a fantastic match.

The triumph over Sunderland was an important result for Coventry in their battle to remain in the Premier League, and Lampard's decisions on the squad proved justified.
