Former France international Christophe Dugarry has launched a fierce attack on Tottenham's hierarchy following their decision to hand Roberto De Zerbi a five-year deal. Speaking on RMC Sport, the expert cast doubt on the Italian coach's ability to manage at top clubs:
I’ve never truly understood his real level. People tell me he did brilliantly at Brighton, Sassuolo, and other teams. But for me, he's still not a solid guarantee of success at big clubs. And they’ve given him a five-year contract! What he’s done is like robbery in broad daylight—he didn’t even need a mask. It’s just incredible.
Dugarry’s sharp criticism comes in the wake of a disastrous start for the North Londoners in the Premier League. Tottenham has managed just two points from their opening four matches and has yet to score a single goal in the league. Their goal drought has now extended beyond 400 minutes, following dismal goalless draws against Nottingham Forest and Everton.
After their home match against Everton, fans vented their frustration with loud boos directed at the players. The pressure has intensified further, especially given that the club splurged around €350 million in the summer transfer market. De Zerbi’s teams have historically needed time to settle, but with four consecutive matches without a goal, patience from supporters and the hierarchy is rapidly running out.
