Alan Hutton believes Trent Alexander-Arnold could rediscover his best form at Chelsea under Xabi Alonso if he leaves Real Madrid.

Alan Hutton believes Chelsea would be an ideal destination for Trent Alexander-Arnold if the defender decides to leave Real Madrid. He believes Xabi Alonso knows how to use the Englishman's greatest strengths and could help him return to his previous level.

Alexander-Arnold left Liverpool two summers ago but has been unable to establish himself in Madrid.

Injuries limited his involvement last season, and this term he has started only one of the past six matches in all competitions under Jose Mourinho.

Denzel Dumfries is ahead of him in the pecking order, while Mourinho has preferred to use Federico Valverde on the right in some matches.

Hutton believes a return to the Premier League would benefit Trent:

Trent Alexander-Arnold could do really well at Chelsea because Xabi Alonso would use him properly and get the most out of his strengths.

His attacking potential is enormous.

His vision, his understanding of the game and the quality of his passing are all at the highest level.

It's strange watching Real Madrid. I saw El Clasico and Valverde played at right-back, while Dumfries and Trent were on the bench.

Even for me, that was painful to watch. Valverde is a magnificent footballer, but he is a midfielder.

It's a shame things haven't worked out for Trent in Madrid so far, because he is incredibly talented.

I think a return to the Premier League would suit him. He knows the league inside out.

A coach like Alonso would know what he wanted from him, use him properly and bring out his best qualities again.

Mourinho recently admitted that leaving Alexander-Arnold out of the team was difficult for him:

First of all, I feel bad about it myself. I don't like it when players feel bad. I want them to feel good.

Of course, when you build a squad with two players for each position and then play a third, I don't like that.

But there are things more important than those feelings. There are things that are more important for the team at a particular moment.

And now I have decided to change the structure of the midfield and use Fede Valverde there.

Amid talk of a possible January departure for Trent, Jamie Carragher admitted he would welcome him back at Liverpool:

I would take him back.

Of course, he would get a lot of criticism because I think he made a mistake. A big mistake when he left for Real Madrid.

We are definitely missing his creativity.
