15-Second Brief
Barcelona are interested in Lisandro Martinez, with Sport reporting that a new Raphinha contract could help fund a January 2027 move.

Barcelona are interested in signing Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez in January 2027. According to Sport, they hope to take advantage of uncertainty over the Argentine's future, while a new contract for Raphinha could help them find the funds for a transfer.

Martinez's position at Old Trafford has deteriorated markedly over the past month. Public criticism of the club's hierarchy and poor performances have made the defender one of the most talked-about figures in Michael Carrick's team.

Matthijs de Ligt is also returning to training and matches after a long absence, increasing competition at centre-back.

Manchester United could sell Martinez this winter

The 28-year-old Argentine's contract expires in June 2027. Manchester United have the option to extend the agreement for another season to avoid losing him on a free transfer.

However, recent events have made a January sale an increasingly attractive option for the club.

Barcelona are monitoring the situation closely and hope to sign the 2022 World Cup winner for a relatively modest fee.

According to Sport, Barcelona view the former Ajax defender as a suitable option to strengthen their defence in the second half of the season.

Hansi Flick's side have faced numerous injuries to defenders, with a fight for trophies in La Liga and the Champions League ahead.

More expensive options, including Alessandro Bastoni, are beyond the club's financial means.

How Raphinha could help with the transfer

A new contract for Raphinha could play a key role in a potential deal.

The Brazilian is enjoying an outstanding season: Hansi Flick has used him as a centre-forward and he has already scored 19 goals in 13 matches.

Barcelona hope to extend Raphinha's contract until 2030 while changing how his salary is distributed.

According to Sport, some payments due in the second half of the current season will be deferred across the remainder of the new contract.

This would reduce the current strain on the wage bill and give Barcelona more room to register new players within La Liga's financial restrictions.

Barcelona hope for a favourable deal

Barcelona hope Martinez's difficult situation at Manchester United will allow them to agree a transfer without major expenditure.

The club also hope to offer the Argentine a relatively modest salary initially, with increases over the course of the contract.

Raphinha's contract extension could therefore indirectly help Barcelona complete a move for Martinez as early as January. The final decision, however, will depend on agreements with Manchester United and the defender himself.
