Jamie Redknapp has not held back in his criticism of Manchester United's leaders, which included Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo, after their disappointing showing in the 3-2 defeat against Brighton. According to the pundit, the team looked even worse after bringing on their star players.
United started the match brightly, racing into a 2-0 lead with Shi Lacey scoring an impressive goal on his first start and Mason Mount doubling the lead just moments later.
However, Brighton turned the match on its head. Haralampos Kostoulas pulled one back before half-time, and in the second half, Pascal Groß and Maxim De Kuyper both struck to secure a stunning comeback.
Following this defeat, Carrick made significant changes to his lineup but decided to use key players in an attempt to salvage the situation. On came Fernandes, Mainoo, Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Joshua Zirkzee.
Jamie Redknapp remarked:
You could see that Brighton were better prepared. They had clear combinations, and even after the changes, they looked very good.
United brought on their ‘insurance’ in the form of Bruno and Mainoo. Everyone thought they would make an impact, but in reality, the team just got worse.
Zirkzee came on and couldn’t find a teammate with a pass. Brighton were superb and fully deserved the win.
United’s manager, Michael Carrick, reflected on the game:
The start of the match was fantastic. It was everything we hoped for and more, especially with Shi’s goal. But then we let the game slip away from us.
We can’t be leading in a game like this and lose in such a manner. I understand the frustration and disappointment. I accept that. The responsibility lies with me. We must play better.
