Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes Manchester United will lose to Aston Villa in the next round of Premier League fixtures. Despite their impressive 3-2 Champions League victory over Roma, he does not expect Michael Carrick's side to build on that result.
United ended an eight-match winless run in midweek with a remarkable comeback against Roma.
The Italian side led 2-0 after just 16 minutes through goals from Matias Soule and Donyell Malen. The hosts were booed off by their own supporters at half-time, with Carrick's position looking critical.
But Bruno Fernandes scored a penalty at the second attempt in the second half before Matheus Cunha struck twice to give United victory.
Carragher expects another Manchester United defeat
Despite their European success, United remain in a difficult position in the league.
After nine matches, they are 17th with just one win, two points above bottom side Sunderland.
Aston Villa, by contrast, are unbeaten in five Premier League matches and have climbed into the top half of the table.
However, Unai Emery's side have lost two of their last three matches in all competitions, going out of the EFL Cup to Bournemouth and losing to Barcelona in the Champions League.
Nevertheless, Carragher expects the visitors to win 2-1 at Old Trafford.
Speaking to Sky Sports, he also shared his predictions for other matches in the round.
We have a great set of fixtures this weekend.
Arsenal should deal with Hull fairly comfortably after going top last week. The same applies to Manchester City — I think they will get back to winning ways against Nottingham Forest.
I'm also confident Liverpool will take three points against Crystal Palace.
Carrick's future remains in question
The forthcoming match against Aston Villa could have a major bearing on Manchester United head coach Carrick's position.
The international break begins after this round of fixtures, giving the club's hierarchy an opportunity to assess the team's results and make a decision on Carrick's future.
Eddie Howe, Fabian Hurzeler, Julian Nagelsmann and Antonio Conte have previously been named as potential candidates to replace him.
Emery has also been linked with the job at Old Trafford, but media reports say the Spaniard is close to signing a new contract with Aston Villa after winning the Europa League last season.
United beat Villa 3-1 at home in March, but lost 2-1 to them at Villa Park earlier in the season.
