Aston Villa have signed Sion Suzuki for £30 million and Matteo Rugeri for £17 million to replace Martinez and Digne.

Aston Villa have officially announced the acquisition of two significant signings: 23-year-old Japan international goalkeeper Sion Suzuki and 24-year-old Italian left-back Matteo Rugeri.

The Birmingham club has reportedly paid around £30 million to Parma for the services of Suzuki, who is viewed as a long-term number one for the next decade. This transfer comes despite the failed move of main goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez to Juventus over the weekend, as the clubs could not agree on a final fee. The future of the World Cup-winning Argentine remains uncertain at Villa Park.

Meanwhile, Rugeri has made the leap to England from Atletico Madrid for £17 million. The Europa League winner with Atalanta in 2024 is expected to fill the gap left by Lucas Digne, who joined PSG on August 9. Both newcomers could make their debuts this Sunday as Villa launch their Premier League campaign against Brighton.

'You’ve never seen a goalkeeper like this': The phenomenon of Sion Suzuki

Former goalkeeping coach at Belgian side Sint-Truiden, Dennis Rudel, provided glowing remarks about Aston Villa’s new recruit, comparing his physical prowess to that of comic book heroes:

  • Incredible physical strength: Rudel recalled an incident after a match against Anderlecht, where the team bus was surrounded by thugs: "The head coach jokingly called Sion: 'Go sort it out.' It looked like a scene from Asterix and Obelix, where everyone scattered. You’ve never seen such a player or goalkeeper!";
  • Line effectiveness: His enormous wingspan and remarkable speed enable him to save 90-95% of shots he reaches, excluding rebounds into the net;
  • Footwork and hands: Excellent ball distribution over any distance, combined with his agility and power, makes him one of the most gifted athletes globally;
  • Psychological resilience: Extreme focus, iron discipline in training, and readiness for immense pressure, especially when compared to Emiliano Martinez.

This year, Rudel was instrumental in Suzuki's move from Urawa Red Diamonds to Belgium, and after just a year at Parma—where he joined for £8 million and made 59 appearances—he has established himself as one of the top five goalkeepers in Serie A.
