Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is considering running for FIFA president. According to L’Équipe, the 77-year-old Frenchman could make a final decision as early as the middle of next week.
Wenger, FIFA's head of global football development, has received support from a number of football officials who oppose Gianni Infantino's re-election. His international reputation, extensive coaching experience and standing in Africa and Asia have been cited as advantages.
Wenger has not yet officially confirmed that he will run. Another potential challenger to Infantino is Kozo Tashima, the honorary president of the Japan Football Association, who has already announced his intention to stand.
The FIFA presidential election is scheduled for 18 March in Rabat, Morocco. If Wenger decides to stand, the contest for the leadership of world football could become considerably more interesting.
