Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has shed light on Estevao's absence from the pitch during the Carabao Cup match against Liverpool. Despite the Brazilian winger warming up, he remained an unused substitute.
The Londoners ended the encounter at Anfield in a 1-1 draw before succumbing 5-6 in the penalty shootout. According to Alonso, the decision was influenced by the high intensity of the match, physical demands, and the need to consider the players' conditions.
“There were very intense periods in the game, and we knew it would be physically demanding. Malo also had cramps. It’s a long season, and everyone will have their moments,” Alonso explained.
The coach acknowledged that he understood Estevao's frustration, as the player was keen to get onto the field. However, he emphasised that difficult decisions had to be made regarding substitutions towards the end of the match.
“I get his situation. He would definitely like to play. I’m sure Estevao will have more opportunities; it's my responsibility,” the Chelsea boss stated.
Alonso also pointed out that matches in England are marked by high intensity and that the young Brazilian still needs to fully adapt to the demands of the Premier League.
“We know how intense the Premier League and matches in England are. You need to be ready for that. For Estevao, this is his second season, and he had an injury. I don’t think he’ll have to wait long,” the manager added.
