Giorgi Mamarashvili confessed that the prepared tips for penalties in the match against Chelsea did not help him at all. Nevertheless, the Liverpool goalkeeper saved Emmanuel Emega's shot, helping his team reach the quarter-finals of the League Cup.
The match ended in a stalemate after regular time, leading to a penalty shootout to decide the winner.
The key moment was Mamarashvili's save from Emega's shot.
Prior to that, Valentyn Barko hit the post, and then Wesley Fofana sent the ball significantly over the bar, allowing Liverpool to secure victory.
After the match, Mamarashvili explained that the traditional tips regarding the opponent's shot directions were useless this time.
He said:
I also had that piece of paper, but it all turned out to be wrong!
When asked if the notes helped at all, the goalkeeper simply replied:
No.
Mamarashvili also explained how he made his decision in the incident with Emega.
Before the shot, I watched his supporting leg — where he places it.
After that, I decided to jump to the right.
The Georgian admitted he wished to make more saves, but one was enough in the end.
I wanted to save more, but sometimes one is enough.
For Liverpool, this victory marks their fifth win over Chelsea in penalty shootouts in official matches.
Previously, the Merseysiders had beaten the Londoners in similar fashion in the finals of the FA Cup and EFL Cup in 2022.
Now, Andoni Iraola's team will face Bournemouth in the quarter-finals.
Iraola himself admitted that this was the opponent he wanted to avoid.
He said:
To be honest, even before the draw, I said: 'The only team I don't want to face is Bournemouth.
This match will be special for me.
Iraola previously worked with Bournemouth, making the quarter-final in December a reunion with his former club.
