Newcastle United have restarted negotiations with the representatives of Felix Nmecha, a 25-year-old midfielder from Borussia Dortmund and the German national team, making him a key target for this transfer window.
The Magpies had previously considered signing the player but pulled back due to Borussia's steep asking price. However, the situation has shifted since Matthias Jaissle took the helm at Newcastle, with his long-term vision for rebuilding the team aligning with Nmecha's representatives.
Rebuilding the squad and Borussia's asking price
Newcastle envisage Nmecha as the ideal reinforcement for their midfield following a significant player exodus.
In the midfield department, Newcastle have already sanctioned the departures of Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes, who is set to join Arsenal.
Financial requirements: The main hurdle in securing Nmecha's services is Borussia's stance. The release clause of £75 million only becomes active in 2027, hence Dortmund are reportedly demanding around £100 million for the German midfielder.
Competition: This hefty price tag previously deterred Manchester United, although the Red Devils are still monitoring the situation surrounding Nmecha.
Borussia's sporting director, Nils-Ole Buk, has publicly dismissed the chance of selling Nmecha, as they aim to build their midfield around him and Jude Bellingham. Nevertheless, Newcastle are preparing an official bid to test Borussia's resolve.
