Aston Villa have officially confirmed their interest in signing Bayern Munich midfielder Joao Palhinha.
The Portuguese international has emerged as a potential replacement for Amadou Onana, who is set to miss the entire season due to injury.
The club's sporting director, Damian Vidagani, stated that negotiations are underway for the 31-year-old player. However, an agreement has yet to be reached.
"We need a midfielder because Amadou Onana is out for the whole season," Vidagani explained after a friendly match.
"Joao Palhinha is a very good player who would fit our plans. We're in talks, but at the moment there is no deal in place," he added.
Vidagani also highlighted the solid relationship between the two clubs amid ongoing discussions.
"If anything happens regarding the transfer, it will always be based on the great respect we have for Bayern," he remarked.
"Our clubs are friends, and our relationships with Max Eberl, Christoph Freund, and all the other officials are simply excellent," he stated.
Bayern are reportedly demanding €25 million for the midfielder.
However, Aston Villa are currently not in a position to meet that asking price, and a loan option is also off the table.
