Arsenal show interest in Cristian Romero, but Tottenham block transfer

Arsenal are reportedly interested in Tottenham captain Cristian Romero, but this transfer looks highly unlikely. Spurs are unwilling to let their key defender move to their North London rivals.

The 28-year-old Argentine's relationship with Tottenham has soured significantly over the past year. In February, he publicly criticized the hierarchy, and he's missed games through suspensions and injuries. He even attempted to leave for Argentina before the season concluded.

Why are Arsenal looking for a centre-back?

Despite having several players in defensive roles, Mikel Arteta often deploys Piero Incapie, Jurriën Timber, and Riccardo Calafiori on the flanks. Only Gabriel, William Saliba, and Cristian Mosquera have been consistently used in central defence. With Saliba sidelined for an extended period owing to a back injury, the Gunners have started scouring the market for a reliable performer.

Where could Romero go?

Spurs have already prepared for the potential departure of Romero, signing Jan-Paul van Hecke from Brighton for £52 million and bringing in Marcos Senesi on a free transfer.

Atletico Madrid remains the frontrunner for Cristian Romero's signature. The Spanish side is engaged in negotiations for the Argentine, with the deal expected to be around £40 million. Serie A club Inter Milan has also shown interest in the player.
