Mason Mount's injury in a friendly against PSG (1-1) in Gothenburg may push Manchester United's hierarchy to rethink their transfer strategy and search for another midfielder.
Mount, who has been testing his skills in a deeper role under Michael Carrick, was forced off the pitch in the first half due to a foot issue.
Manchester United's midfield situation
Before Mount's injury, The Athletic's Laurie Whitwell reported that the bosses at INEOS were sceptical about the need to sign a third midfielder, banking instead on a quartet including new arrivals Andre Santos (£50 million), Youri Tielemans (£35 million), as well as Kobbie Mainoo and Mount himself.
However, this latest setback alters the landscape:
- Squad concerns: Casemiro left Manchester United at the end of last season, and Manuel Ugarte is sidelined for an extended period due to a serious injury.
- Injury history: Mount has missed around 400 days due to various injuries since his move from Chelsea in 2023, making it a gamble to rely on him as a consistent option.
- Aiming high: With the return to the Champions League and aspirations in the Premier League, Michael Carrick will need depth in the holding midfield area.
Previously, the Manchester outfit rejected a £116 million deal for Elliott Anderson, who has now joined Manchester City, but INEOS will have to find a more accessible alternative before the transfer window closes.
