Tottenham are not yet considering parting ways with Roberto De Zerbi, despite a troubling opening to the season. As reported by David Ornstein, the option of dismissal is not on the table at the moment, but pressure is mounting on the Italian manager if results fail to turn around.
After four matches in the Premier League, Tottenham have scraped just two points and currently sit perilously close to the relegation zone. Alarmingly, the team has not scored a single goal in this campaign, despite an extensive £300 million investment in player acquisitions over the summer.
Ornstein revealed that the club placed significant faith in De Zerbi, handing him a five-year contract that includes one of the highest salaries among Premier League managers, alongside considerable influence over the club’s overall direction.
David Ornstein commented:
The powers he has been granted are unprecedented for a Tottenham manager. They have revamped the defence, midfield, and attack. On paper, it’s a completely different team, but that hasn’t translated into results yet.
Initially, the club aimed for a long-term rebuild. Chairman Peter Charrington had previously stated that Tottenham would need several transfer windows to achieve their desired outcomes.
However, according to Ornstein, this does not mean that De Zerbi has unlimited time at his disposal:
Patience is wearing thin. They’re asking for time, but ultimately, Roberto De Zerbi will be judged on his ability to get results on the pitch.
A parting of ways would be very costly, but I don’t believe that’s currently on the agenda. Everything now hinges on results and whether he can extract the maximum from this squad after spending nearly £400 million. It’s time to deliver.
De Zerbi took the reins at Tottenham last season and successfully helped the team maintain their Premier League status. This summer, the club made significant additions, including Sandro Tonali, Mateusz Fernandes, Omar Marmush, Savinho, and Jan Paul van Hecke.
