Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has urged the club's hierarchy and head coach Michael Carrick to strengthen the midfield before the transfer window closes.
The legendary England international believes the current crop of midfielders is insufficient for a serious challenge across all fronts this season:
I keep looking at Manchester United's midfield and thinking they need another player. Youri Tielemans, Bruno Fernandes, Kobbi Mainu, and others provide quality for Michael Carrick, but if United are serious about competing for every trophy, they need another midfielder who can step onto the pitch without a drop in quality.
I learned this playing under Sir Alex Ferguson. At Manchester United, you never wanted owners or managers looking at the bench and thinking, 'We've got problems if one of the midfielders gets injured.' You always wanted them to have options. The best squads are judged not by their starting eleven, but by what happens when two or three players are unavailable.
That’s why I believe a third transfer for the midfield is absolutely essential. The season is long, there will be injuries, suspensions, and times when players need a rest. If United can bring in another top-level midfielder who can challenge for a starting spot, Carrick will have real depth and various tactical options to choose from for different games.
Having Bruno, Tielemans, and Mainu is fantastic, but if United want to be in title contention in the Premier League and make a deep run in the European cups, they can't afford to be one injury away from losing their balance. Another quality midfielder could play a huge role for this team.
