Manchester United's efforts to find a quick replacement for head coach Michael Carrick have stalled. Julian Nagelsmann has turned down the chance to take charge at Old Trafford amid the club's current crisis.
According to The i Paper, the former Bayern Munich manager is not currently interested in moving to Manchester. Director of recruitment Christopher Vivell, who knows the German coach's potential from their time together at RB Leipzig, had strongly advocated his appointment. Nagelsmann, however, is not prepared to take on a project in crisis where a new coaching staff would have to build the team virtually from scratch.
A serious split has emerged among United's senior hierarchy. Technical director Jason Wilcox is promoting Newcastle manager Eddie Howe as a candidate, highlighting his vast Premier League experience.
Two other potential candidates are also out of reach: Unai Emery is close to signing a new long-term deal with Aston Villa, while Antonio Conte demanded full and sole control over all transfer dealings during preliminary contact.
United's hierarchy therefore have no agreed candidate. Carrick's future as manager depends directly on the outcome of today's match against Aston Villa, where any setback could prompt urgent changes.
