Milan's Inter have ramped up their search for a new defensive leader to reshape the team under Cristian Kivu.
Following the departures of experienced centre-backs Stefan de Vrij and Francesco Acerbi, the Milan club requires more aggression, speed, and authority at the back. Rebuilding the defence has become a priority for the Nerazzurri in this transfer window, while strengthening the midfield has been progressing more slowly.
Negotiations with Tottenham
According to Corriere dello Sport, Inter are in talks with Tottenham over a deal worth around €40 million for Cristian Romero.
While the clubs are getting closer to an agreement, a consensus on the Argentine defender's salary and his agents' fees has yet to be reached. Romero is well acquainted with Italian football from his time at Genoa and Atalanta, and his arrival may result in the departure of Benjamin Pavard, which would help Inter alleviate their wage bill.
In parallel, the Milan side continues to be interested in Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones, for whom the Merseysiders are demanding around €40 million.
Competition from top European clubs
The completion of Romero's transfer is accompanied by a high level of competition. According to talkSPORT, Barcelona are also interested in the 28-year-old Argentine defender, with Manchester United and Arsenal among the other contenders.
The presence of strong rivals may force Inter to improve the financial terms of their offer in order to finalise the deal and prevent Tottenham from holding firm on the asking price.
