England manager Thomas Tuchel has shed light on the inclusion of Cole Palmer and Trent Alexander-Arnold back into the national team fold. While both players were not part of the squad for the 2026 World Cup, they are set to feature in four crucial Nations League fixtures.
However, Tuchel has issued a clear message to the duo: their return does not guarantee them a starting spot.
In a recent statement, Tuchel said:
They’ve started the season well. There was nothing wrong with what they did before the World Cup; we simply opted for other players at that time.
Now a new tournament begins. Cole has recaptured his form, racking up important assists and goals. That’s why he’s back in the squad.
I believe he has something to prove. The same goes for Trent. We never ruled him out of our plans. He now has the chance to come back and show us his best version.
Alexander-Arnold has made five appearances for Real Madrid this season, starting three of those matches. Despite playing centrally in the Champions League recently, Tuchel envisions him primarily as a right-back.
Tuchel emphasised:
He has to deliver results. It’s competitive out there. I understand the questions surrounding him because he wasn’t with us at the World Cup — we trusted other players back then.
I still stand by that decision, but now it’s his time to fight for his place. Trent has always stated he’s ready for that battle, especially for England. The ball is in his court now.
Palmer is also making a comeback after missing the World Cup. The Chelsea forward has had an impressive start to the season, scoring four goals and assisting twice in his first six games.
Tuchel added:
It’s one thing to receive a call-up and get your ticket back to the national team, like Cole. It’s quite another to demonstrate your worth for England.
When Cole arrives, he needs to take that next step and continue producing the same numbers to earn his spot, keep it, and justify his selection.
Notably, Phil Foden remains absent from the squad, alongside other key players like Morgan Gibbs-White, Adam Wharton, and Harry Maguire. Injuries will also see Dean Henderson, Jordan Henderson, Reece James, Jed Spence, and John Stones miss out.
New faces in the squad include Rio Ngumoa, Alex Scott, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who returns after a strong start to the season with Leeds.
England will play four Nations League matches: facing Spain at Wembley on September 26, travelling to the Czech Republic on September 29, hosting Croatia on October 3, and meeting the Czechs again on October 6.
