Leading European leagues – the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, and Bundesliga – have come together to call for significant governance reforms at FIFA.
In a joint statement, the four leagues urged the introduction of a robust system of checks and balances within the organisation. They criticised the excessive concentration of regulatory, commercial, and political power in the hands of FIFA's upper echelons.
The European leagues are advocating for a permanent decision-making body that includes representatives from national associations, leagues, clubs, and players themselves. Additionally, they have called for a transparent explanation of the rationale behind key decisions, a complete separation of the organisation's oversight functions from its commercial operations, and the assurance that disciplinary proceedings remain free from political interference.
This bold move significantly ramps up the pressure on FIFA president Gianni Infantino, who is gearing up for a fourth term. Currently, Infantino is the only registered candidate ahead of the elections set for March, with applications open until November 18.
The four leading leagues have also urged all potential candidates for the federation's head to publish their reform agendas in advance and guarantee adherence to fair electoral processes.
